KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) – The Kearney Public School Board approved a substantial salary increase for classified staff at its meeting on Monday.

“Our classified staff are essential to the normal functioning of our school system. Our Board of Directors has taken a big step to demonstrate the value and importance of their work. This salary increase will help KPS retain its current staff and recruit the best employees available, ”said Kent Edwards, KPS Superintendent. “Working for a school system is a great opportunity to make a difference and we can now better pay those who work with our students and staff. “

Dr Loofe, Director of Finance, said in presenting his proposal that “due to an extremely competitive job market in Kearney, KPS needed to review the salary ranges of our hard-working classified employees. Two years ago, our pay scales were in line with those of the rest of the city’s employers. As times changed, KPS was not as competitive as we needed to be. Our goal is not only to recruit new people for KPS, but also to retain those who have stayed with us during these times.

Loofe also indicated that this salary increase for classified employees will be in effect for the remainder of this year and for the 2022-2023 school year, with the current step placement applied to this proposal. “Although no step movement is made before the 2023-2024 school year, the adjustment of the salary scale and the placement of our employees at their current step in January 2021 exceeds the annual adjustment of the cost of the life and the increment that one normally receives on an annual basis. “

In addition, the Board of Education approved the addition of four additional dining para-professionals so that each elementary school has the same endowment.

Kathy Gifford, Chair of the Board, said: “As a Board we have embraced this proposal because of the value and essential skills these positions bring to our education system.

The Board of Education has been able to reduce the tax levy in this budget and with the increase in assessment, KPS is able to use the increased funding for the salaries of classified employees. Funding for the 21-22 salary increases and additions will come from the 2021-2022 budget which includes $ 1,053,000.00 of additional revenue from our assessment increase. Funding for increases in 2022-2023 will be budgeted accordingly.
