Brex Dominates Starter Credit Card Market, New Data From Kruze Consulting

SAN FRANCISCO, October 7, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Kruze Consulting, a leading CFO consultancy for startups, today released new data on the best credit cards for startups. The data comes from the analysis of the more than 450 client startups funded by VC at Kruze. All details can be found on Kruze’s Best Starter Credit Cards page, but the data reveals how popular Brex has become among startup founders. With almost 0% market share in 2018, Brex now has over 50% market share for starter credit cards. Ramp is also rapidly entering the space as traditional players like Amex and Chase have seen their market share shrink.

“Deciding which credit card to choose is something that is asked of us all the time at Kruze. Right now it’s all about spend management tools and we see all the major cards competing for the best digital offer they can bring to market, ”said Scott Orn, COO of Kruze Consulting. “The first innovations in personal credit guarantees, digital tools and Founder’s integrations put Brex ahead of the market. Brex has made the opportunity clear and we are seeing great innovations moving the industry forward from new entrants like Ramp. “

Since 2018, Chase, American Express and Capital One have seen their market share drop from around 75% to 35% in 2021. This is largely due to the rise of Brex but also to innovations from Ramp and the Silicon Valley Bank. Brex has gone from 0% in 2018 to 55% market share in 2021. Since launching in 2020, Ramp has rapidly gained 5% market share while SVB has leveraged its user-friendly card to maintain itself between 20- 30% in recent years. American Express has grown from a 30% market share in 2018 to 15% in 2021.

Competition for business start-ups among business credit card players is at an all time high. This competition is driven by technology offerings, particularly focused on expense management, and it’s clear that Brex and Ramp’s offers are compelling for startup founders. The scene is sure to set for an interesting future as the incumbents figure out how to deal with this new threat to their business.
