Stars. They are like us. This is how the saying goes, and for some it seems more true than for others. But honestly, you can believe Andrew Garfield is like us. The concept of the Spider-Verse was exciting in many ways, but we really have to Spider-Man: No Path Home for bringing Andrew Garfield back to our orbit in a big way. Garfield’s recent rebirth has reminded us that the actor has just one way of identifying with him. And, we love it. His last sincere story? Andrew Garfield desperately wanted the role of Prince Caspian in Chronicles of Narnia franchise. But sometimes, no matter how badly we want something, it just isn’t meant to be.

Garfield shared the story of misfortune with Entertainment tonight. He noted:

I remember I was so desperate. I auditioned for Prince Caspian in ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ and I was like ‘That could be it, that could be that. And this handsome and brilliant actor Ben Barnes ended up getting the part. I think it was because of me and him, and I remember I was obsessed. I was obsessed. And I thought, why not me? Why not me? Ben Barnes is a very handsome and talented man. So looking back, I’m not unhappy with the decision and I think he did a great job.

As to why he didn’t get the part, Garfield’s agent told him the cast didn’t think Garfield was “good-looking enough.”

But what why not me moment? It is perhaps the most relevant human thought of all. Especially when we want something with all our heart. Sometimes someone else understands what we care about, and it’s a tough pill to swallow. Garfield adds that during a lull in his career, he spent a year and a half waiting for tables, working at Starbucks, coaching cricket and telemarketing. But Garfield looks at the time before he did what he really wanted as “some sort of necessary luck, in a way.” And we hope it sounds relevant too.

Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man narrowly missed the role of Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) in Chronicles of Narnia

We agree that Ben Barnes is “a very handsome and talented man”. But it is also the case of Andrew Garfield, the Caspian prince in The Chronicles of Narnia, or not. And in the end, everything went well for both of them. And I hope that will work for all of us too. This story is therefore full of hope.

Garfield also shares other touching stories that we love in the interview. Including one about sneaking into a Spider-Man: No Path Home screening with Tobey Maguire to experience the film together. Color us by fainting.

Are stars like us? Probably not. But Andrew Garfield, we can smell you.
