Google was recently devoted to fun little augmented reality Easter eggs, with a plethora of search terms triggering Halloween-themed augmented reality experiences back in October. Ghosts! Jack-o-lanterns! Dancing skeletons!
Now they have another one. Deployed just in time for tomorrow’s Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, this one brings The Child (or, as the world has called it, “Baby Yoda”) to your living room.
Want to check it out yourself? You just need to research the right thing. This is the way:
Open Google.com in the browser of an iOS or Android device
Search for “The Child”, “Baby Yoda” or [The Child’s actual name here which I’ll omit because spoilers].
Scroll down until the “View in 3D” button appears. Tap it, then tap the “Show in your space” button. (Depending on your device, you might need to install the Google search app. It worked on a Pixel by default.)
Wait for the camera view to appear, then wiggle your camera a bit. Once the camera determines where the ground is, it should appear. Make sure to turn up the volume.
I just tested it myself and it worked well, although better on some devices than others. It was fast and flawless on a Pixel, but the lighting was very loud on my iPhone.
There’s a camera button that will let you take photos and videos, and you can drag / pinch to move it around the room or rotate it into place for better shots. Enjoy!
