MELBOURNE, Fla. – A 296 in the first round at the Moon Golf Invitational has the University of Arkansas’ sixth women’s golf team in the hunt as the Razorbacks open the spring season in Melbourne, Fla., on Sunday.

Arkansas finished the day in ninth place in the stacked field that includes nine ranked teams. Junior Julia Gregg leads the Razorbacks with a first round, par 72 on the classic 6,472-yard Suntree Country Club course. His scorecard saw plenty of good numbers with six birdies, second-best in the field, including a 4-under finish on the front nine. A season-long regular, Gregg entered the weekend with four top-20 finishes in the fall.

Freshman Giovanna Fernandez of Paraguay posted a 73 in her college debut. Accustomed to winning, Fernandez has 21 wins in her career around the world and finished strong playing the back nine, even on Sunday.

Sophomore Cory Lopez stepped into a leadership role for Arkansas this year with two top-5 finishes in the fall and posted a 2 of 74 for Arkansas on Sunday. Lopez started well with an eagle on the second hole but added a pair of bogeys before the turn. Lopez was content to play the back nine even to stay in the hunt.

Kajal Mistry scored a 77 and Miriam Avora added a 78 for the Razorbacks to complete the score of five. Ffion Tynan, playing as an individual, posted an 80 in the first round.

Despite finishing ninth, Arkansas is within reach with two rounds remaining. Florida State is the first-round leader with a 2-under 286, followed by No. 8 Virginia with 287. Southeastern Conference No. 7 Florida and Louisville are tied for the third shot of 291. No. 21 LSU and UCF are tied for fifth with a 292. No. 17 Auburn and No. 3 South Carolina are just one shot ahead of the Razorbacks, in the clubhouse with a 295.
